It's no secret
that PG Nick Van Exel was not happy about being traded from the championship-contending
Mavericks to the Warriors, but folks in Golden State are taking a low-key approach.
"I feel for him," says Warriors G.M. Garry St. Jean. "It's like
going out on a date with a beautiful girl and then being left out in the wind
because she won't call you back." St. Jean says he has been in contact
with Tony Dutt, Van Exel's representative, and has been assured that Van Exel
will handle the trade professionally. He says he has not been given a demand,
or even a request, to trade his ticketmaster new point guard. "We're going
to give him some space and time," St. Jean says. "But we're going
to earn his respect here, too." . . .
Don't be surprised
to see the Bulls give PF Tyson Chandler a little time at small forward this
year. He has worked hard this offseason, including playing some wing, where
his size and athleticism create a matchup problem. The occasional big lineup
of Chandler at small forward, Scottie Pippen at point guard and Jalen Rose at
shooting guard would be a nightmare to defend. … Magic SF Pat Garrity
has struggled following surgery on his right knee and could miss much of training
camp. With SF Grant Hill unlikely to play this season, the team hopes to sign
SF Donnell Harvey to add depth. … Last summer, Spain's Pau Gasol steamrolled
through international competition at ticketmaster the World Championship, then
returned to the Grizzlies and put up a so-so season with inconsistent effort.
This summer, Gasol plowed through the European championships, leading the tournament
with 25.8 points per game. "He was good," says one scout. "But
I still have not seen him bring that to the NBA."
